WINNERS: 2014 HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY ARTS AWARDS

AWF GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE 2014 HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY ARTS AWARDS JUDGES:

CONFERENCE CHAIRPERSON: Anita Miller Garner, chair of the HSLAA since 1995, has taught fiction writing at the University of Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth University. She is Professor of English at the University of North Alabama. Undeniable Truths, her collection of short fiction, was released in late 2009. She blogs about Southern Culture at Talking in Accents.

CREATIVE NONFICTION: Lanier Isom is a journalist and author living in Birmingham, Alabama. She co-wrote Lilly Ledbetter’s memoir, Grace and Grit: How I Won My Fight at Goodyear and Beyond. She is currently at work on a novel.

FICTION: Michael Morris is a fifth generation native of rural Florida and the first in his family to graduate from college. A graduate of Auburn, Morris also holds an MFA from Spalding University. He is the author of four novels, including Man in the Blue Moon, which was named a best book of 2012 by Publishers Weekly and a best book of fiction by the Alabama Library Association.

DRAMA: Michele Eller, a former English and Theatre teacher, is currently Secondary Instructional Coach and Fine Arts Liaison for Elmore County Public Schools. Michele also serves as the secretary for the executive board of the Alabama Conference of Theatre and as the theatre representative for the Alabama Arts Coalition.

POETRY: Susie Paul is associate professor, emerita, and Distinguished Teaching Associate in the AUM Department of English and Philosophy and an adjunct instructor at Huntingdon College.

PORTFOLIO SCHOLARSHIP: Jacqueline Allen Trimble, a native of Montgomery, earned her MA and PhD in English from the University of Alabama. She has taught composition, American Literature, African-American literature, women’s literature, creative writing, Southern literature and critical theory and has won numerous teaching awards. Her poetry collection American Happiness is forthcoming from NewSouth Books. She currently chairs the Department of Languages and Literatures at Alabama State University.

LITERARY MAGAZINE: Black Warrior Review staff judged the magazine competition this year, including Kirby Johnson, Editor-in-Chief; Robert Hitt, Managing Editor; Connor O’Neil, Nonfiction Editor; and Saeide Mirzaei, Assistant Fiction Editor. All are candidates for the MFA in Creative Writing at the University Of Alabama.

LITERARY ARTS AWARDS BY GENRE

PRIZES: First Place winner receives $150 and the judge’s book. Second Place receives $75 and the judge’s book. Third Place winners receive $50 and the judge’s book. Judge’s Special Recognition winners receive the judge’s book. Certificate winners receive a personalized certificate.
