WINNERS: 2012 HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY ARTS AWARDS

AWF GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE 2012 HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY ARTS AWARDS JUDGES:

CONFERENCE CHAIRPERSON: Anita Miller Garner, chair of the HSLAA since 1995, has taught fiction writing at the University of Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth University. She is Associate Professor of English at the University of North Alabama. Undeniable Truths, her collection of short fiction, was released in late 2009. She blogs about Southern Culture at “Talking in Accents.”

CREATIVE NONFICTION: Anita Miller Garner

DRAMA: Greta Lambert is a 2012 Artist Fellowship Recipient in Theater from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Since 1985, she has been an actor at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) where she is also Director of Educational and Outreach. Ms. Lambert is currently performing as Queen Katherine in Henry VIII.

FICTION: Marlin Barton, assistant director for Writing Our Stories with the Alabama Writers’ Forum, is the award-winning author of four works of fiction, including The Cross Garden, his most recent novel. Mr. Barton teaches in the Master of Fine Arts brief-residency program at Converse College.

POETRY: Susie Paul is Associate Professor, Emerita; Distinguished Teaching Associate, AUM, Department of English and Philosophy; and Adjunct Instructor, Huntingdon College.

PORTFOLIO SCHOLARSHIP: Kirk Curnutt, professor and chair of English at Troy University, Montgomery, is an award-winning author of 11 books, including the novels Dixie Noir and Breathing Out the Ghost.

LITERARY MAGAZINE: Emma Sovich is editor of The Black Warrior Review and a candidate for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at The University of Alabama.

LITERARY ARTS AWARDS BY GENRE

PRIZES: First Place winner receives $150 and the judge’s book. Second and Third Place winners receive $75 and the judge’s book. Judge’s Special Recognition winners receive the judge’s book. Certificate winners receive a personalized certificate.
