Helen Keller Public Library presents DANIEL WALLACE, author of BIG FISH, as final program in writing series June 28
Tuscumbia, AL -- Writers to Readers at the Helen Keller Public Library concludes Friday, June 28 in Tuscumbia with best-selling author Daniel Wallace. The free program begins at 6:30 p.m. and concludes by 8 p.m. Wallace will read from his work and participate in a discussion with host of APTV’s BookMark Don Noble. A book sale and signing follows.
Daniel Wallace is the author of six books, including Big Fish, which was adapted as a major motion picture; Ray in Reverse; The Watermelon King; Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician; The Kings and Queens of Roam; and most recently, Extraordinary Adventures. In 2014, he wrote and illustrated a children’s picture book, The Cat’s Pajamas. Wallace is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his alma mater, where he directs the Creative Writing Program. Don Noble, Professor Emeritus of English at UA, is the popular host of the Emmy-nominated literary interview program Bookmark, on Alabama Public Television. He reviews fiction and nonfiction regularly on Alabama Public Radio and can be heard in the Shoals on WQPR 88.1 FM. His awards include the Eugene Current-Garcia Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Literary Scholar and The Governor’s Arts Award from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
Library director Tammie Collins said, “We have had tremendous community response to Writers to Readers at the Helen Keller Public Library since it began in February. This is our final program and having it featured in the Helen Keller Festival show the community support of reading in Tuscumbia.”
Collins said that the “outreach effort with Deshler High School widened our audience to students and has sparked an interest in creative writing at the high school.” Collins plans to bring authors who write for children and young adults for the next season – Spring 2020 – and hopes to work with several other area libraries and widen the scope of the project.
“Mayor Kerry Underwood and the City of Tuscumbia have supported our effort to bring contemporary writers to the library and to encourage young people to read,” Collins said.
The Alabama 200-endorsed series is made possible with support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Tuscumbia Kiwanis, Tuscumbia Civitans, and the Friends of the Helen Keller Public Library.
